P4: Fraction of Remainder (Basic)

Fraction of a remainder is a concept similar to Fraction of a Fraction.
Student will need to know that they must not make both denominator the same if each denominator of the 2 fractions do not represent the same total.

Such questions are common in Section C of P4 exams.

Jaya has some plates in green, blue and red in colour.
1/4 of his plates are green.
5/6 of the remaining plates are blue and the rest are red.
He has 40 blue plates.

How many plates does he have altogether?

P4P5 Math: Fraction of Remaining(Simpler)

"Fraction of remaining" is a concept that requires students to be able to understand that in the 2 fractions given, one represents "Fraction of Total" and the other represents "Fraction of Remaining".

The denominators of both fractions need not be made to be the same as both represents a different value.

Such questions usually appear in Section C of P4 exam papers.

P5/P6 Math: Fractions with and without units (expert)

Problem sums with different fractions in the same question.

Many students will simply start doing fraction subtraction by making the denominator to the a common multiple of the 3 denominators. 
But that will result in a wrong answer as not all fractions are representing the same total.

Eg. 1/4 kg of the rice is not the same as 1/4 of the rice.

1/4 kg of rice represents 1/4 of a kilogram of rice
but
1/4 of rice represents 1/4 of the total of all the rice.

Such questions usually appear in Paper 1.
Calculator usage is not allowed.

Janelle has 8/9 kg of rice at first.
She gave 1/2 of the rice to her mum and made dumplings using 1/3 kg of the rice.
How much rice does she have left?

P4/P5 Math: Difference between 2 Fractions of Total

Fraction of Totals where the problem sum provides 2 of such fractions and the total is not known.

Model Drawing should be employed here to demonstrate the understanding of the "total parts".

P5/P6 Math: Fraction of Total and another Fraction of Total

Fraction problem sums are common in P5 and P6 exams.

This particular type presents itself with a fraction of total that was used at first and provides a known value of the 2nd part that was used. 

The fraction of the total that was "used" was also given.

With 2 fractions of the total are provided, students need to know what to do with the value given in order to solve.

Tricia read 1/5 of a book on Monday.
She read another 48 pages on Tuesday.
In the 2 days, she had completed reading 2/7 of the book.

P4/P5 Math: Fraction with units and without units

P4 and P5 Fractions is a relatively large topic.

One of the type of question requires student to be able to tell the difference between the following fraction problem sum.

Malcolm has 3/5 kg of sugar.Malcolm has 3/5 kg of sugar.
He gave away 1/2 kg of the sugar. He gave away 1/2 of the sugar.
What is the mass of sugar he has left? What is the mass of sugar he has left?
