P6 Math: Speed and Time differences given

As the syllabus refreshes itself in 2026, P6 students will no longer need to learn Distance, Speed and Time from the year 2026 onwards.

Such questions will go down in history as what the former generation of 12 year olds have learnt and were able to solve(2025 and before).

The question below provides 2 possible speeds and 2 timings (of lateness) between the faster and slower speeds.

These questions were common in Paper 2 of P6 Prelims.

Brenda is driving to meet her friend at a specified time.
If she travels from her home and drives at constant speed of 80km/h, 
she will be 20 minutes late.
If she drives at a constant speed of 60 km/h, 
she will be late by 45 minutes.

What is the distance she had to travel to meet her friend?

P3/P4 Before and After One Party Unchanged (Start Multiples, End Difference)

Such questions presents 2 values to be multiples of each other at first.

One of the value undergo a change(addition/subtraction) and the resulting difference is given after the chance.

Such questions require students to use "Before and After Comparison Models" to visualize the changes and to also be aware that one of the values "did not change".

These questions are common in Section C of P3 and P4 exam papers.

There were thrice as many boys as girls whom were in the school hall at first.
After 15 boys left the school hall to go toilet, 
there were still 17 more boys than girls remaining in the hall.

P6 Math: 3 Parties Before and After with Uneven Ratio at the End

A total of 3 parties are given at first.
Each of the party undergo increase or decrease and the end ratio is given.
Some of the increase/decrease are fractional and some are numerical.

In the end, the ratio of remaining money of Elizabeth to Wendy to Lindy was 5:4:2.

P4P5 Math: Before and After Start Multiples End Same

Such problem sums starts with 2 parties, one being a multiple of another at first.
Both parties undergo addition or subtraction and results in both having equal value at the end.

This type of problem sum will require student to use before and after models to represent visually the starting multiples of one another at the "Before" model and the "After" model to represent the changes and how both became "Equal".

These questions are common in Section C of P4 exams and Paper 1 of P5 exams.

P4/P5 Math: Arranging Fractions in Ascending or Descending Order

Fraction comparison are often tested by having students arrange 3 different fractions in ascending(smallest to biggest) or descending(biggest to smallest) order.

To compare and ascertain which is the biggest, student can either make numerator the same or denominator the same. When comparing different numerators of fractions(with same denominator), the biggest numerator is the biggest fraction. But when comparing different denominators of fractions(with same numerator), the opposite will have to apply.

Such questions are common in P4 and P5 exams.

Where the starting difference is known and the ending ratio is given after some numerical increase/decrease is applied to both parties.

This question compares a fraction of one value with a fraction of another.

The difference between the 2 fractions of different totals and their total are values that are given.

Being able to compare fractions requires quite a few skills.


- Comparing with "HALF"
- Comparing with "ONE WHOLE"
- Comparing Numerators when "DENOMINATORS ARE THE SAME"
- Comparing Denominators when "NUMERATORS ARE THE SAME"
