P6 Math: Finding Perimeter of Rectangle without Length or Breadth given

Many P6 questions in Prelim were derived from the Math Olympiad.

One of such question requires student to know what is the perimeter of a rectangle when neither the length or breadth of the rectangle was given.

Such questions usually appear in Paper 1.

P3/P4 Math: Area and Perimeter of Rectangles with missing Length

Area and perimeter of squares and rectangles are taught in P3 and P4.
Students will need to remember the formulas needed to calculate the areas and perimeters of rectangles using the "Length" and "Breadth".

For the following question type, the area or perimeter of the rectangle is already given together with the breadth. Students must find the missing "length" before attempting to solve for the perimeter or area of the rectangle.

P6 Math: Circles with Rectangles and Diagonals

A rectangle is drawn inside a circle with one of its corner at the center of the circle.

The diagonal length of the rectangle between 2 corners is provided together with its length and breadth.


Students are expected to find the area of the circle using the information from the rectangle(within the circle).

Such questions often appear in P6 Paper 2 during the Prelims.
Calculator usage is allowed.

P6 Math: Composite figure of Square formed around the edges of a Rectangle

The question below is a relatively uncommon one.

2 pairs of squares are drawn along the edges of a rectangle.
The total area of the 4 squares and the perimeter of the rectangle is known.
With that, students must find out what is the area of the rectangle in the middle.

Such questions appear in Paper 2 of P6 Prelim papers.

P4/P5 Math: Composite Figure made of Identical Rectangles

The formula for area and perimeter of shapes such as rectangles or square are taught since P3.

Composite figures made of identical rectangles requires students to be able to see lengths and breadths of each rectangle and how they are related to the composite figure.

Such questions are common for P4 Section C and P5 Paper 1.

P6 Area and Perimeter can be challenging with questions such as the one below.

A shaded rectangle is surrounded by smaller unshaded rectangles along it's lengths and breadths.

The perimeter of the shaded rectangle and the breadth of each smaller rectangle is given.
